Louis Neethling - Director

Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. Immersed at an early age in a country with so many languages, colours and cultures. South Africa and its' people have been an important influence in my life.

I started off my TV career as a researcher and runner at the SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) I then progressed onto presenter, which I enjoyed immensely. However, it was only when I met the scriptwriter and producer, Louise van Niekerk, that I was given the opportunity to learn about directing and found where my true passion lay. Together we started Dtv (Deaf Televison) a magazine programme on the SABC. I started out as director/presenter and eventually became director/executive producer of Dtv. It was whilst working on Dtv that I had my first opportunity of directing drama - on a soap called Young and Speechless.

I realised that directing drama was my first love and decided to act on my dreams of directing films. I applied for and won, a Rotary International Scholarship to study film at the NFTS (National Film and Television School) in the UK. At the same time I also secured funding from The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in South Africa to make a short film.

In 2001, I commenced on a tailor-made, 3 month, intensive course at the NFTS -mentored by Leslie Manning, Brian Tufano BSC, Pia di Caula and Alec Mills BSC. It was a wonderful and happy experience and resulted in my short film, Dis?ABLE, being shown at various film festivals around the world.

I returned to South Africa and my work at Dtv. It was only after I was approached by See Hear, BBC, with a view to directing their new deaf drama, Switch, that I moved permanently to the UK.

I moved to the UK in Autumn 2001 and started work at the BBC. Firstly on See Hear and Switch, then Crimewatch, Holiday 2006 and Open i.

I have never given up my dream of directing both deaf and mainstream drama and I became freelance in January 2007, to act on these dreams. I am working in all different aspects of television and film: directing shorts, developing scripts, consultations and also teaching workshops.

In February 2007, I set up my own production company, Mutt & Jeff Pictures with the sole aim of developing drama scripts for film and television. Taking this route will enable me to pursue my lifelong love of communicating and making accessible, great stories for a diverse audience.
